'Xen' the 7-year-old Springer Spaniel. Xen presented in practice after having multiple episodes of vomiting and diarrhoea, with him unable to keep any food or water down. His owner reported that he was quiet in himself and seemed uncomfortable.
Following an initial patient assessment, between Xen's owner and the case vet, it was decided to conduct further investigations. Blood samples were taken, and intravenous fluid therapy was started to help rehydrate Xen. Radiographs were taken and an ultrasound scan performed. The findings revealed fluid and gas build up with a possible obstruction within the intestines.
As a result of these findings, Xen underwent an exploratory laparotomy surgery, to explore his abdomen and find the possible cause of his symptoms. During the surgery, it became clear that Xen had a blockage in his small intestine with the foreign material also in his stomach. These were carefully removed by operating vet Jim.
It is unknow what the foreign material was, it looked to be food packaging with netting. Had it not been removed, Xen would have been at risk of life-threatening sepsis and shock.
We are pleased to say that Xen recovered well from the surgery and has since been back the practice for post op checks. His owners report that he is back to his bright, happy self and are so pleased that he has made a full recovery.
