Gertrude - Speckled Sussex Chicken

'Gertrude' the Speckled Sussex chicken, who unfortunately had an accident during a winter storm and ended up with a broken leg.
She was brought into practice and examined by vet Caroline.

Gertrude was anaesthetised to enable Caroline to take x-rays of the leg, confirming the type and position of the fracture.

A splint was placed on the broken leg to stabilise the bones and allow healing to take place.

Gertrude was started on pain relief and antibiotics as she also sustained a wound during the accident.

Gertrude was anaesthetised weekly for the next 2 weeks to remove the splint and re-xray the fracture to monitor the healing.

Sooty - Fish

Sooty, the 6-year-old Goldfish, was recently presented in practice with a large lump on his left side.

Fortunately, Caroline one of our vets, has experience with fish, so there was a much happier outcome for Sooty.

In order to remove the lump, Sooty was to be anaesthetised, this was done using a specific aquatic in water anaesthetic drug.
We are pleased to report that Sooty has made a full recovery and is enjoying life!

Marshmallow - Rabbit

<span style="line-height:1.

Marshmallow was brought into the practice and examined by Caroline one of the vets.

Sometimes if the rabbit is lucky, the intestinal blockage can clear itself by moving along the intestine and into the caecum, but this was not the case.

This then allowed her stomach to empty normally.
However, being a rabbit, her post operative recovery was as intensive as her pre-operative stabilisation.
'husbun' Ginger, who had spent a very lonely night apart from her.

Marshmallow has made a complete recovery and is back to enjoying life, and the sunshine in her large, grassed enclosure.
This is an example of how important it is for rabbit owners to recognise signs of illness in these prey species, which do their best to hide all signs until they're severely unwell.

Walter, the 3yo, Domestic Shorthaired, presented in practice after sustaining an injury to his tail.

It is unknown how the injury occurred, as Walter lives on a farm and spends a lot of his time outside.

Radiographs were advised to check for other potential injuries and uncover the severity of his remaining tail damage.

The amputation surgery, and recovery were a success.

'Ginny', the 3-month-old Boxer puppy.

X-rays were taken which showed that Ginny's growth plates were still intact, But.

To help stabilise and encourage the union of the fracture naturally, a support bandaged was applied.

Unfortunately, bandages and puppies aren't always a match made in heaven, so after 2 weeks Ginny was bandage free.

So far, Ginny has been recovering very well from her accident.

Kyla, the lovely 1-year-old German Shepherd, came to the veterinary practice after showing some symptoms of cystitis (These include: indoor urination, straining, increased frequency of toileting, and blood in the urine).

A blood sample was collected to assess Kyla's progesterone level, revealing that she was post-ovulation, indicating that spotting should have ceased.

To eliminate the possibility of urinary/bladder stones or anatomical abnormalities, X-rays and an ultrasound scan were conducted.

Kyla was provided with pain relief and antibiotics to address her condition, leading to a great recovery.

Robin came to see Caroline at the practice as she was passing blood from her back end.

Robin had X-rays and an ultrasound of her abdomen and bladder stones were ruled out as the cause of the blood.

Robin recovered well from her anaesthetic and was soon eating and passing faeces and urine without problems.

Robin came back to the practice six days after her surgery and she was back to normal.

Stitch the 6yo French Bulldog presented in practice after vomiting and not eating for a few days.

Blood samples were taken and intravenous fluid therapy was started to help re-hydrate Stitch.

Mhairi and Stitch’s owner decided to go ahead with surgery to explore his abdomen.

Stitch had swallowed part of a soft toy… a large lion head.

We are pleased to say that Stitch has recovered extremely well from the surgery and is now back to his bright, normal self!
Given his history, he is not given soft toys at home, so must have picked up the toy whilst out on a walk

We wish him the best and hope that he has now learned (for the second time!

Buster - Springer Spaniel

We would love to introduce you to Buster, the 4year-old springer spaniel.

Did you know this is one of the strongest tendons in the body?

Buster was given supportive care and a few days later was admitted for surgery to repair the damaged tendon.

A dressing with a splint was placed on the limb for around 8-10 weeks, this was to help support the leg and keep the wound clean, preventing infection.

After nearly 3 months Busters big day arrived, where he was ready to have the pin removed.

Buster has been recovering well and is currently being seen by a physio and hydrotherapist to strengthen the leg again, after many weeks of immobilisation.

Meet Rosie, the 18month old Border Terrier, owned by Ellie one of our student vet nurses

After beginning to skip on walks and having difficulty jumping onto furniture, Ellie brought her into practice for a check over.

Over the last couple of months Rosie has been recovering well from the surgeries.

The surgery normally involves a combination of 3 procedures.

Wedge Recession Trochleoplasty - The groove is deepened by removing a wedge of the cartilage and recessing it deeper into the femur.

Tibial Tuberosity Transposition (TTT)- Re-alignment of the patella ligament which joins the patella to the shin bone.

Soft Tissue Reconstruction - Tissues either side of the patella are often to loose or tight, these are corrected allowing the patella to track smoothly.

Following the exercise program set in place, Rosie has been making a fantastic recovery and is soon to start Hydrotherapy to help build her muscle back up.

Elsie the tortoise owned by vet Caroline was brought into practice after being unwell.

This condition occurs when the eggs do not develop properly and are without a shell.

Follicular stasis can only be corrected by spaying, an operation to remove the ovaries and oviducts.

Elsie underwent surgery and has recovered well.
